Falling in love during a trip one thing, but cruising for a foreign boo from the remove of a chat window prompts all sorts of questions about what a prospective paramour is after and how genuine the romance is—not to mention the complicated logistics of it. After an awkward dinner, she vanished for good. Determined, Ricky pursued his backup: Ximena, whom he had also messaged via ColombianCupid.
Also pretty, older, and self-possessed, Ximena ventured from her rural town Villanueva to see Ricky. To keep the story short: Ricky avoided telling Ximena the truth, asked her to marry him with a ring originally meant for the other woman, and the whole thing predictably backfired. To show his contrition, Ximena demands that Ricky, who does not know how to swim, jump in the water.
He does. When you hear of these so-called international dating apps, you might think: Okay, so like mail-order brides. And not unfairly. That was more or less my first impression. In my ish years as a sexually active gay man, I’ve slept with many, if not quite all, kinds of men, foreign and otherwise. In my case, however, the encounters were with people who were near me at the time.
Why, if you could find a partner within a mile radius, would you go out of your way to woo someone whose joining your life would require exorbitant resources—time, emotion, money, a capable lawyer? The truth, at least on these apps, seems to lie somewhere in the muddy middle.

By Joe Otterson. TLC is adding a new series to its late-night lineup. The show aims to help single people find their future partner from the comfort of their couch. And with the country staying home, what better way to celebrate love and togetherness, than helping singles find their match virtually and for the rest of us to root for them in the process.
The show displayed the lengths people would go to save money, often in ways that were shocking or borderline impractical. His segment focused on a date. Insco said that he likes online dating because many of the services are free. If he went to a bar to meet women, he would have to spend money on drinks and gas. Through an unnamed service, Insco met Brandy, who he decided to take to lunch – although he hoped she had eaten beforehand so that he wouldn’t have to buy her a big meal.
During the date, Insco was unashamed of his frugality, loudly proclaiming that he likes the restaurant because they allow him to take the utensils home. The segment showed that Insco only uses paper plates and plastic utensils and cups, so that he doesn’t have to use the dishwasher. Additionally, he confessed to Brandy that he only flushes his toilet once a week so he can save water.
For the meal, Brandy ordered a pulled pork sandwich, which came with a side of macaroni. Insco felt that it was better to order to one meal that they could share instead of spending too much money on a lot of food, but he did order himself one single, solitary rib. Insco teaches a zumba dance class. One of his students allowed him to stay in her late grandfather’s condo rent-free, as long as mows the lawn.
The clip also showcased Insco’s roommates, who revealed that they pay Insco rent; the roommates appeared unaware that Insco does not pay rent himself. In addition to not using the dishwasher and not flushing the toilet, Insco showers with his clothes on.

By Lauren Sarner. The reality show Mondays at 11 p. This is about having a party live on TV. Viewers at home can be a fly on the wall for the dates and also weigh in via polls on social media. The single person is periodically asked to eliminate some of the potential choices, to keep the show unpredictable and help them hone in on their ultimate decision.
Perhaps most unique about the series is that it takes place virtually, with the singles never actually meeting in person but attempting to get to know each other from the comfort of their respective couches. Meanwhile, viewers get to play Cupid by voting in real time via social media, offering opinions on who the episode’s single should select. The show proved to be a hit with viewers, but there’s much that fans may not know about the series’ unique evolution.
The original concept for the dating show called for the “singletons” and their respective suitors to meet face to face. As TLC noted in its announcement for the show, all the action would be filmed with a “traditional production crew” and broadcast to viewers live. After pushing back the premiere date, producers scrambled to rejig the format in a digital way. As a result, television’s first-ever socially-distanced, remotely-filmed dating show was born.
And now we can’t picture it any other way. The series utilizes remote-conferencing software that allows video meetings or, in this case, dates to take place in cyberspace. Instead, their interactions were relegated entirely to virtual experiences. There’s also an interactive element that allows viewers to let their voices be heard via Twitter, casting votes in real time throughout the live broadcast to share their opinions about which of the three people the contestant should select to take on a virtual date.
After all, the couples are typically filmed forging connections and getting to know each other face-to-laptop via Skype, FaceTime, and similar apps. Can a dating show that hinges on singles meeting each other virtually really work?
